Witham's Conservative parliamentary candidate Priti Patel visited the ROM Group, a successful steel works business with six sites across the UK. The ROM Group employs 36 people locally in Witham and met with Priti to discuss manufacturing growth, jobs, our growing economy and the UK Steel's charter for Sustainable British Steel
Priti said: "I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the ROM Group in Witham. In an industry that employs 20,000 people and was worth £4.9bn in 2013, it is great to see a hub in Witham providing jobs for our local economy. Having discussed the UK Steel's Charter for Sustainable British Steel, I am very supportive of the work they are doing and believe this industry-led initiative will make a difference to the quality of the products used in Britain.
"I look forward to working with the ROM Group locally and on the UK Steel's Charter. Their commitment to Witham makes them a real asset to our constituency. Under the Conservatives businesses like the ROM Group are benefitting from reductions in corporation tax and cuts to national insurance contributions for employees, making it easier for businesses to employ people.
Under a Labour Government all this would be in jeopardy as they plan to raise taxes, both for businesses and hardworking people."
Robert Holton, Managing Director of ROM Ltd., commented: "We are very pleased to welcome Ms Patel to our Witham facility and explain more about the specialist steel solutions ROM produces and discuss current market issues in relation to sustainability and imports.
"As Ms Patel recognises, the steel industry is an essential part of the British economy. Her support for the Charter for Sustainable British Steel is testament to this and is very much welcomed by the industry."
